Phalaenopsis lobbii
A fascinating miniature, epiphytic orchid species native to the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas and parts of Indochina. Named after the English plant hunter Thomas Lobb, this dwarf orchid is famous for its tiny, thumbnail-sized, star-shaped white flowers featuring a large, prominent labellum (lip) banded with striking caramel-orange or brown-red vertical stripes. Adapted to highly seasonal monsoonal climates, it naturally behaves as a deciduous or semi-decididous orchid, dropping its few dark green leaves during cool, dry winter dormant periods. In early spring, it produces a flush of deliciously sweet-scented flowers that open sequentially on short flower stalks.
