Psychopsis versteegiana - an epiphytic orchid species native to America.

Well known for its large, spectacular blooms that mimic a butterfly in flight, this orchid is one of my favourites. Unlike many orchids, Psychopsis is a sequential bloomer, meaning one flower spike can produce flowers one after another for months—or even years!

Its stunning mottled foliage (maroon and green) makes it a beautiful decorative plant even when not in flower.

Quick Care Guide

(always take into consideration your set up and local climate)

  • Light: Prefers Bright Indirect Light. It should be protected from direct midday sun to prevent leaf burn. You will know if the light level is not sufficient if you get long thin leaves. They should be quite rigid covered with almost olive green and maroon pattern.

  • Temperature: Thrives in Warm to Intermediate climates (18C to 28C). It is less cold-tolerant than other species; keep it above 15C for best results.

  • Watering: Likes to stay Evenly Moist. Do not let it dry out completely. Water just as the medium starts to feel dry to the touch. They can be quite sensitive to water after repotting or when just mounted. Keep the watering to minimum until you see new roots.

  • Important Tip: Never cut the flower spike unless it is brown and dead! New flowers will continue to emerge from the tip of the old spike.

  • Potting Media: Best grown in Fine to Medium Orchid Bark mix to maintain humidity around the roots. Great to grow mounted, but must water several times when the weather is hot and dry.
